We welcome motivated students and researchers interested in joining the Rock Mechanics and Geomechanics Research Group at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC).
Our research integrates laboratory experiments, computational modelling, and field investigations to advance the understanding of rock and soil behaviour and address engineering challenges in subsurface energy development, mining, and geotechnical hazards.
Graduate Research Opportunities (PhD and MASc)
We welcome inquiries from prospective PhD and MASc students with backgrounds in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, rock mechanics, computational mechanics, and related disciplines.
Potential research areas include:
- Rock deformation, fracture, and multiscale characterization
- Hydraulic fracturing, rock–proppant interactions, and fracture conductivity
- Coupled hydro-mechanical processes in rocks
- Landslide monitoring, slope stability, and machine learning
- Tailings storage facilities and geotechnical hazards
- Numerical modelling of soil and rock behaviour
Research opportunities and financial support depend on available projects, funding, and the applicant’s qualifications.
Postdoctoral and Visiting Research Opportunities
We welcome inquiries from postdoctoral researchers and visiting scholars interested in collaborating on research in rock mechanics, subsurface geomechanics, and geotechnical engineering.
Opportunities may be supported through externally funded research projects, fellowships, or institutional and international research exchange programs.
Undergraduate Research Opportunities
UNBC undergraduate students interested in gaining research experience are encouraged to explore opportunities in laboratory testing, computational modelling, and research data analysis.
Eligible students may apply for funding through the UNBC Internal Research Funding Opportunities, including undergraduate research awards and NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards.
International Visiting Students
We welcome international undergraduate and graduate students interested in short-term research visits through programs such as:
- Mitacs Globalink Research Internship — undergraduate students
- Mitacs Globalink Research Award — graduate students
Eligibility and funding are subject to the requirements of the respective programs.
How to Apply or Express Interest
Prospective students and researchers are encouraged to contact Dr. Wenbo Zheng at wenbo.zheng@unbc.ca with:
- A brief introduction and description of research interests
- An up-to-date CV
- Academic transcripts (for prospective graduate students)
- Relevant research experience, publications, or technical skills, if applicable
Please indicate the intended program (PhD, MASc, postdoctoral research, or visiting research) and your anticipated start date.
We look forward to hearing from researchers and students who share our interests in rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering.
